Aesthetically modifying the eyes and getting rid of the extra mass around the eye lid – both upper and lower is called as Blepharoplasty or Eyelid Surgery. This can correct the defects, deformities or disfigurations around the eyes and give your face a perfect look. Excess tissue, skin and fat can be surgically removed and any deformities in shape and size can be corrected.
The procedure includes the restoration of the aesthetics of the eye region by eliminating excess skin and tissues, smoothening the eye muscles, tightening the underlying supporting structures and resecting and re-draping the excess fat.
Surgical Procedure
The eyelid surgery is performed by making an incision externally along the natural skin lines of the eye lids – both upper and lower. The creases can later on hide the scars from the view. This is especially true for the scars below the eye lashes.
Another technique used in eyelid surgery is making an incision from the conjunctiva which is the interior surface of the lower eyelid. The main advantage of such a surgery is that it removes the extra tissue without leaving a visible scar exteriorly. This kind of surgery however does not allow the removal of the excess eyelid skin. That will have to be removed from the outside.
The surgical procedure usually takes up to three hours to complete. There are some factors you will need to know and understand in order to take post operative care. There will be some amount of initial swelling and bruising. This will however subside within the first two weeks of surgery. To see the final results of blepharoplastic surgery, it will take several months.
It is best to take a pre and post photograph of the eye region in order to make a comparison and understand the difference. It takes four weeks for the stitch (that hold the eye lids in place during healing) to dissolve.
These techniques for eyelift surgery have been developed by ancient Greeks and Romans. Several books have been written and data has been collected for these procedures.
Other techniques that are more advanced and less operative are – laser techniques.
